Not wearing life jackets cost pair lives, inquest told

11:56 am on 19 May 2011

An inquest in Queenstown has been told that not wearing life jackets cost two men their lives.

Brett Singleton and Anton Woitasek died when a jetboat they were travelling in, struck a jet ski on the Kawarau River in January 2009.

Another man in the jet boat survived, along with the two jet ski passengers.

No one on the jet boat was wearing life jackets.

Coroner David Crerar has indicated he will be looking to deliver a serious safety message from this inquest.

A Maritime New Zealand investigator told the court that the lack of life jackets had fatal consequences.

The inquest is due to finish on Thursday and Coroner David Crerar is expected to reserve his decision.
