A toddler is in Waikato Hospital with head injuries after a police chase and collision in Hamilton. An officer has also been hurt.

Police say the driver of a car they pulled over on Mills Street just before midday on Thursday drove off as officers were walking towards it.

Witnesses say the car hit a concrete sign and a traffic island and uprooted a tree before the driver turned it back the way he had come, colliding with the pursuing police car.

The driver tried to escape on foot, but was caught and arrested.

A member of the public pulled the girl, aged between one and two, from the car and an ambulance took her to hospital with minor head injuries.

An officer in the car was also taken to hospital with lacerations to his head.

Police say they were unaware that the girl was in the car when they started the pursuit.
