A former Rangipo Prison guard has pleaded guilty to a corruption charge.

Manu Jensen, 45, was accused of smuggling contraband into the central North Island jail near Turangi during October and November 2009.

Following an internal investigation, the Corrections Department dismissed Jensen and referred the case to police.

Given the seriousness of the charge, Solicitor-General David Collins, QC, was required to approve it before police could make their arrest in late April.

Jensen entered his guilty plea on Thursday at the Taupo District Court and will be sentenced on 19 July.

Police have earlier said the corruption charges carry a potential jail term of up to seven years.
