Arts trust seeks to beautify Ponsonby eyesore

An Auckland arts trust wants to beautify a huge hole in the ground abandoned by developers who went into receivership five years ago.

The receiver for the failed $250 million development of Soho Square has secured a new resource consent for a development 40% bigger than before.

The hole is almost twice the size of a rugby field and sits in the middle of Ponsonby's up-market shopping strip.

Mark Castle from the Uptown Arts Trust says locals are sick of looking at the hole and has applied to the Auckland Council for permission and funding to surround it with billboards covered in murals.
