Airgun fired at NZ rider in Tour de France

9:33 pm on 18 July 2009

Bike New Zealand says cyclist Julian Dean will continue racing despite being shot at during the Tour de France.

The incident occured during the 13th stage of the race from Vittel to Colmar.

Dean's team says he was shot by an air rifle or pellet gun at the top of a climb towards the end of the stage. He has a minor injury to his finger but was able to finish.

Bike New Zealand chief executive, Kieran Turner says he doubts the incident will derail Dean's racing plans.

Three times world champion Oscar Freire of Spain was also shot at. A spokesman for his team said he heard three shots and then felt a sting. A pellet was removed from his leg by his team doctor after finishing the stage.

The race organisers have asked police to open an investigation. Both riders have given statements to police.

The stage was won by Heinrich Haussler of Germany.

Rinaldo Nocentini of Italy remains race leader.
