A New Zealand film has received a prize for short films at the Cannes Festival.

Blue, directed by Stephen Kang, beat nine other short films for the Grand Prix Canal prize at the 50th La Semaine De La Critique.

The film observes a day in the life of a once famous man going about his daily chores in a teletubby-type costume.

Kang said from Cannes, where he was celebrating with producers Tara Riddell and Leanne Saunders, that the win was still sinking in.

He said he is currently developing a script for a new film and hopes the win will ensure the film comes to fruition.
