Cameras to be used as rubbish dumping deterrent

12:16 pm on 20 May 2011

Gisborne District Council intends to use mobile video cameras, as a deterrent against illegal dumping of rubbish.

Environment manager Hans van Kregten says the cameras can identify people from more than 300 metres.

They will be mounted on a power pole and moved regularly.

Mr van Kregten says the intention is that the cameras will act as a deterrent for people dumping rubbish, especially on beaches and near public amenities.
