Replacement waka taking shape

While a stand off continues over the ownership of a waka in Wellington, a replacement is taking shape in the Far North.

Wellington City Council is threatening to take Te Runanganui o Taranaki Whanui to the High Court if $150,000 is not paid to settle a dispute over Te Raukura.

The runanga is demanding a signed agreement so both sides are clear on what they are getting for the money.

Northern waka builder Hekenukumai Busby says work is going well on a 14-metre kauri-hulled waka the Wharewaka o Poneke Charitable Trust has commissioned to display in a new building on the Wellington waterfront.

He told Waatea News the waka will be in Wellington in August in time to be used for Rugby World Cup promotions.
