Police station damaged by arson

Palmerston North police say a fire at a police station in the city was arson.

A neighbour contacted the fire service at about 3am on Monday after noticing that the empty Highbury station was alight, police say. Three fire crews extinguished the blaze quickly.

The area commander for Palmerston North, Inspector Pat Handcock, says the top floor of the two-story structure has suffered the most damage, though not beyond repair.

Mr Handcock says a team from the Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking information from the local community.

He says the station was previously attacked by an arsonist who threw a molotov cocktail at the building in 2005.
