A teenage driver who fled from a crash on Saturday night in Cambridge that left another teenager in critical condition was handed over to police by his mother.

The 16-year-old was a suspended driver and failed a breath test once in custody, police say.

They say the driver failed to give way and collided with a stationwagon.

Three of the five people in the stationwagon were injured, including a 16-year-old boy who is in critical condition in Waikato Hospital's Intensive Care Unit.
