Ministry investigates staff advice over national standards

The Ministry of Education is investigating allegations its staff left a Nelson school with the clear impression it could say it is using the national standards when it is not.

Radio New Zealand News reported the claims and similar allegations by another school principal last week.

The ministry says its staff told Tahunanui School that its charter, which is supposed to include targets based on the standards, did not meet legal requirements.

It also says the School Trustees Association is helping the school's board and the ministry is taking another look at its communications with the school.

Principal Paul Drummond, who is also the Principals' Federation vice-president, would not comment further on the situation on Monday.

However, the federation says it has heard of several new cases of unusual advice.
