A representative of the Hundertwasser Foundation says a Whangarei building designed by the late Austrian artist would attract international interest.

The Whangarei District Council is on Thursday unveiling a model of a gallery designed for the city by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in the 1990s.

The council is keen to commission the project, and is calling for public support.

Richard Smart, who was Hundertwasser's New Zealand assistant and helped the artist build his famous toilet block at Kawakawa, says the benefits of the project are potentially huge.

He says it would put Whangarei on the map globally, and there would be significant spin-offs for tourism and culture.
