Water metering plan argued at Kapiti council session

Arguments for and against a controversial $8 million water metering plan have been heard at a Kapiti Coast District Council meeting

The council wants to reduce water usage from 560 litres per person per day to 400 litres.

Many submitters feel the plan is being rushed with little research done.

One of the main concerns is in how a metering system would work and how usage would be calculated.

Arguments in support suggest metering will ensure high users such as large families will not be subsidised by those on fixed incomes, such as the elderly.

Kapiti Mayor Jenny Rowan is promising a thorough investigation before a system is introduced, which could be as early as 2013.
