Korean War citation presented to NZ veterans

New Zealand veterans of the Korean War have been presented with the Korean Presidential Citation for meritorious service and heroism in battle almost 60 years after it was awarded.

The citation, made in November 1951, recognised the role the 16th Field Regiment played in the Battle of Kapyong in halting the movement of Communist forces south towards Seoul.

Veterans gathered at Linton Military Camp on Thursday to receive an insignia from the Korean Minister of Veteran Affairs.

The Korean Veterans' Association says a refusal by successive New Zealand Governments to recognise military awards from other countries, was behind the delay in veterans being recognised.

It says those who fought at Kapyong are delighted it's finally happened.
