Two women were taken to hospital on Thursday after their car crashed into a falling tree at Cooks Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula.

The ambulance service says the tree fell in front of the car, before the driver could stop, as torrential rain caused flooding throughout the North Island.

The Fire Service helped free them.

Thames hospital says the driver, in her 40s, was discharged with a broken leg, while her mother, 77, was transferred to Waikato hospital on Thursday night.

Waikato hospital says she is in a stable condition.
