New group to lobby for KiwiRail's workshops

A new lobby group says Dunedin must fight to secure the future of KiwiRail's Hillside workshops.

KiwiRail has indicated it will require 300 - 500 new wagons per year for the next few years.

The Chinese company, CNR, has been contracted to build 300 at a cost of $29 million.

The group 'Keep Kiwis Working - Build KiwiRail Wagons Here in New Zealand' says Hillside desperately needs the work and so does Dunedin, as it will provide jobs, training opportunities and have major flow-on effects for local businesses.

Spokesperson David Kearns says the work can be done to a higher standard at Hillside and will work out cheaper for taxpayers.
