Police in Taupo advise boaties to have proper means of communication after two men spent about 11 hours on Lake Taupo after their engine broke down.
The men were rescued by the Turangi Coastguard about 8.30pm on Sunday after a relative reported them missing.
Senior Constable Barry Shepherd says the men had no means of contacting anyone ashore and drifted to the eastern side of the lake.
It is important to have a device such as a cellphone when on the water, he says.
