Fishing guides upset at $2500 audits

8:10 am on 31 May 2011

Fishing guides are concerned an audit of safety standards in the tourism industry will hurt operators who are already struggling.

The Government has told adventure tourism operators they will have to be registered from October and will have to pay up to $2500 for a safety audit.

The Professional Fishing Guides Association says it has an unblemished safety record and national president Frank Murphy says its 170 members are unhappy with the extra costs they are facing this year.

He says the industry is struggling to remain profitable because of a downturn in the number of anglers from the United States, Japan and Europe.
