Historic war site languishes while sale awaits

The Government, Wellington City Council and Wellington Regional Council are being accused of failing to take responsibility for a historic wartime site that has fallen into disrepair.

The Defence Force has been trying to sell its 80-hectare site that includes the 1870s Fort Ballance on the Miramar Peninsula since making it surplus to requirements in 1995.

Local military enthusiast Allan Jenkins says it is a shame the graffiti-covered fort has been ignored and the powers-that-be in Wellington need to start taking some responsibility.

"It's actually part of their brief as the people who govern that they have to look after these places," he says.

Mr Jenkins says other places regard such sites as assets to the community.

Business group Miramar Enterprise says the longer the site remains in limbo unsold, the more it deteriorates, and is also calling on authorities to do something.

The regional council says the land is not a priority, but the city council wants to talk with the community about it.

The Defence Force has been carrying out some maintenance on the property and is in discussions with the Department of Conservation and the Historic Places Trust about what is to be protected.

The Port Nicholson Block Settlement, which represents Taranaki Whanui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika, has the first right of refusal to the land.
