AA members back underground rail project

Three out of four Auckland Automobile Association members questioned in a survey are in favour of a proposed underground central city rail loop.

The Government says Auckland Council is exaggerating the benefits of the $2.4 billion project.

But an AA survey of 6030 members found 76.7% percent support the proposed rail project, and 82.5% also want another rail link, from the city to the airport.

The survey found 71% of those questioned want a rail line between the city and the North Shore.

However the AA believes that support will drop once members are told of the costs and how it will be paid.

The survey's margin of error is 1.3%.
