Capital plans road closures during Rugby World Cup

9:33 pm on 2 June 2011

Wellington City Council is considering shutting off nine inner-city streets for two days during the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals weekend in October.

Under the proposals, nine streets would be shut from 4am on Saturday, 8 October to 6am on Monday, 10 October.

They are: Courtenay Place, Blair and Allen Streets and Inglewood Place and part of Tory, Taranaki, Dixon, Manners and Cuba Streets.

Council documents say there would be access for residents and businesses in the mornings, and for emergency services at all times.

The council is also proposing closing parts of six other streets around the stadium for several hours at night on eight separate days while the tournament is on.

They are: Bunny and Mulgrave Streets, Kate Sheppard Place, Thorndon Quay, and Featherston and Stout Streets.

The council will vote on the proposals next week.
