Five foreigners arrested over jewellery heists

9:32 pm on 2 June 2011

Five foreigners have been arrested in relation to hold-ups involving jewellery worth more than $700,000.

A Sydney-based jewellery manufacturer and salesman was robbed of items worth more than $100,000 at his Parnell property in May.

Later that month, two other jewellery salespeople were robbed of more than $600,000 worth of jewellery outside Auckland's Rydges Hotel.

Two men and a woman were arrested in Wellington last week. Two other women were arrested at Auckland Airport while trying to check in for a flight to Los Angeles.

Police say three of those arrested are Colombians, travelling on Amercian passports.

The five will appear in the Auckland District Court on Friday, charged with aggravated robbery.

Investigators are still trying to locate two men who are travelling on Mexican passports.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard says the crimes appear to be well organised.
