An intersection in Whangarei was on Friday re-opening on a trial basis, as roadworks near completion.
Contractors are building an intersection to link Western Hills Drive with Stage 2 of the Kamo bypass.
Detours around the roadworks have been causing traffic queues on State Highway 1 through Whangarei, especially at peak times.
The Transport Agency says the job is almost finished, and if everything, including new traffic lights, works smoothly at the intersection on Friday it will remain open.
If not, detours will be re-instated for the holiday weekend.
