4:43 am on 4 June 2011

The first sightings have been made of Matariki, the constellation also known at Pleiades, that marks the Maori new year.

Chef Rewi Spraggon told Waatea News that his first sighting on Thursday from the top of the Waitakere ranges, was of a bright cluster, indicating a prosperous year ahead.

He is marking the Maori new year with a food forum at the Auckland War Memorial museum next week, showing people traditional ways of preparing and preserving kai.
