Wider promotion of Samoan language

7:30 am on 4 June 2011

Organisers of Samoan Language Week are widening a campaign to promote the language in other parts of New Zealand.

In the past, activities have focused on Wellington and Auckland, which have large Samoan populations.

But one of the main celebrations is taking place on Saturday in Rotorua, which will host the Manu Samoa rugby team during the Rugby World Cup.

Organisers say the change recognises the fact that Samoans are moving to many different parts of the country.

Samoan communities in Australia and the United States have also adopted Samoan Language Week.
