New data on tsunamis frequency

Thames Coromandel District Council says there is new data indicating tsunamis from the Tonga-Kermadec trench happen more frequently than previously thought.

The data has prompted both the district council and Waikato Regional Council to look at how the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula might better handle tsunami-related risks.

Council staff discussed tsunami preparedness with locals and visitors to the Coromandel at a workshop in Whitianga on Saturday.

District council strategic manager Peter Wishart says the new data on the Tonga-Kermadec trench is not cause for immediate alarm, but communities should be prepared.
