A lawyer campaigning for a Nelson chef jailed for murdering an Australian woman in Norfolk Island has written to the Government asking that he be allowed to serve his sentence in New Zealand.
Glenn McNeill is serving 24 years in New South Wales for the murder of Janelle Patton in 2002.
Wellington human rights lawyer Tony Ellis and documentary maker Bryan Bruce argue that he should serve his time in New Zealand where family and friends would make rehabilitation more likely.
But the Ministry of Justice says a prisoner transfer is not possible under the law and there are no plans for legislation to change this.
Meanwhile, questions about McNeill's guilt raised in a documentary by Mr Bruce have been referred to the Australian Federal Police.
