Public role in robbery investigations acknowledged

Police say the public played a key role in helping them arrest seven foreigners suspected of involvement in two jewellery robberies in Auckland.

Last month $700,000 worth of gems were stolen in two separate incidents in the suburb of Parnell and outside the Rydges Hotel.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard says two arrests resulted from tips from the public after photos were released.

He said foreign criminals should not see New Zealand as an easy touch as the police work closely with other government agencies such as Customs.
