Quick thinking saves Porirua marae

9:39 pm on 7 June 2011

A man who used a wet blanket to douse flames at a Porirua marae is downplaying his actions, saying he only did what others would have.

Neighbour Ben Sutton was outside having a cigarette on Sunday night when he noticed a flickering light coming from the Horouta ki Poneke marae.

After calling the Fire Service, he says he grabbed a woollen blanket and doused it in water, before scaling a fence and racing to the fire.

He found an old pram stuffed full of items under a deck alight and threatening to take hold.

Mr Sutton says he had to pull the pram out from under the deck before he was able to bring the fire under control.

Anyone who knew how to put out a fire would have done the same thing, he says.
