Justice Minister repeats warning to legal profession

Justice Minister Simon Power has repeated his threat to strip the Law Society of its responsibility for regulating the legal profession.

The minister first raised that prospect 18 months ago, after the behaviour of some lawyers was criticised in a report by Dame Margaret Bazley.

On Thursday, he reminded a select committee that lawyers had been given two years to clean up their act, and the deadline expires in November.

The Law Society, which registers lawyers, says it has made improvements and says the minister recognises this.

The issue is complicated by a transfer of legal-aid work for low-income clients to salaried lawyers working for the Public Defence Service, which has prompted some legal-aid lawyers to threaten to work to rule.

Mr Power told Morning Report that the lawyers opposing moves for low-income clients to be represented by public defenders are a minority and their argument is flawed.

However, he said, good progress is being made by the Law Society.
