Kiwi rugby league captain Benji Marshall will face a court hearing in August over a charge of assaulting a man at a McDonald's restaurant in Sydney.

The Wests Tigers player did not appear in court on Friday, when the three-day hearing was scheduled.

He is accused of assaulting Soliman Naimey, occasioning actual bodily harm, at the fast-food outlet in March.

His lawyer, John Byrnes, said 14 witnesses would appear for the prosecution, and up to four for the defence.

A not-guilty plea was entered on Marshall's behalf in April.
