School community traumatised by student's death

The headmaster of King's College in Auckland says the school community has been traumatised by the death of another student.

David Gaynor, who was 17, died after an incident on the Greenlane Bridge on the southern motorway.

Police say there was no car crash and they are not seeking anyone else, but they will not give any other details.

The Year 13 student, the son of business commentator Brian Gaynor, had attended the school ball, where ambulance staff had to treat a teenage girl for heavy intoxication.

College headmaster, Bradley Fenner, says David had been taken home from the ball by his father.

He says parents and students have been sharing their grief at the school chapel on Sunday.

Mr Fenner says Mr Gaynor had a delightful, laid back and appealing personality and was a very popular classmate.

College chaplain Warner Wilder says the students are stunned and are slowly trying to come to terms with it all.

He says there will be a special assembly at the school on Monday.

Three students from King's College died last year, including one who drank himself to death at a party.
