Houses could go in SH One upgrade

9:25 am on 15 June 2011

Residents of the suburb of Hataitai in Wellington are shocked to learn that their homes could face demolition as a result of an upgrade of State Highway One from Levin to Wellington international airport.

The Transport Agency says four lanes are planned for Wellington road and Ruahine street. These are currently two lanes, but turning bays will increase that to six lanes in places.

Wellington road resident Rob Philipsen believes his home and another 15 properties on his side of the street would have to be demolished.

The agency says it is talking to affected residents now, before public consultation starts next month.
