A panel of Wellington people charged with selecting new alternatives to the controversial Wellywood sign met for the first time on Friday.
The seven people were hand-picked by Wellington International Airport, which wanted to erect the large Hollywood-style sign where incoming tourists would see it.
The panel includes an organiser of a protest against the original sign, as well as representatives of the business and film communities.
A panel member and Wellington Regional Council chair, Fran Wilde, says ideas will be taken from the public, which the group will narrow down before going to a public vote.
She says the process is democratic, but could be lengthy.
