A 34-year-old man serving a life sentence for murdering a child when he was a teenager has been denied parole.
Robin James Pitney was 15 when he killed 11-year-old Leif Wulff in Timaru in 1991.
In its decision, the Parole Board says Pitney has a long history of drug use in prison.
He has now successfully completed a Drug Treatment Unit programme, which the board has said he must do if he wishes to be considered for release, but the latest psychological report puts him at high risk of reoffending.
The psychologist recommends that Pitney, who is in a self-care unit, attend the 16-week temporary release arrangement.
The board supports this and says it will assess him again in six months.
