More rain predicted for Ohope

6:31 pm on 19 June 2011

Civil Defence says it is monitoring the weather in the Bay of Plenty beach settlement of Ohope, with another short burst of heavy rain predicted before Monday morning.

The Whakatane region was battered by torrential rain on Saturday, causing a landslide which engulfed an Ohope house, killing Hugh George Biddle, who was 17.

A Civil Defence Controller for the Whakatane District Council, Diane Turner, says the forecast rain is unlikely to be anywhere near as bad as that.

She says the ground is already very water logged and they are prepared for action if need be.

Ms Turner says she is confident sufficient precautions were in place to prevent landslides on the damaged stretch of road, but says there is always going to be a risk.
