An elderly couple are in Waikato Hospital after being hit by a vehicle while standing on a median strip on State Highway 1 on Tuesday.
A 71-year-old man suffered critical head injuries and is in intensive care while his 67-year-old wife's condition is described as serious.
Police say the couple were found lying on the road after a truck and trailer unit had completed a passing manoeuvre.
They say the driver stopped at the scene and has been interviewed.
Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the accident.
