Ash cloud still enveloping NZ

11:06 am on 24 June 2011

The Civil Aviation Authority says the ash cloud preventing some airlines from flying is still covering the whole of New Zealand.

Jetstar and Qantas have a policy not to fly under ash plume, from a volcanic eruption in Chile, and both airlines' trans-Tasman and domestic flights have been cancelled until at least midday on Friday.

Pacific Blue has also cancelled flights in and out of New Zealand, with cancellations running into Saturday.

The CAA says the ash cloud is not expected to move away from the country until later on Friday night and early Saturday.

The plume is currently sitting at about 18,000 feet, which means airlines still flying will have to adjust to a lower controlled airspace.

Air New Zealand continues to operate its standard schedule to all domestic and international ports.
