Farmers call for working party to review stock bylaw

5:16 pm on 23 June 2011

Federated Farmers wantsWaikato District Council to set up an independent working party to review a bylaw that requires farmers to pay to move stock on roads.

The council is considering renewing the five-year-old bylaw introduced to keep roads safe and clean.

Federated Farmers says it is unnecessary and just means more red tape and costs for farmers.

Its Auckland president, Wendy Clark, says the bylaw requires farmers to have a permit for any stock movements on roads, and in some cases requires them to build an underpass.

Ms Clark says the council needs to consult more with farmers and the community before re-confirming the bylaw.
