Research supercomputers linking

Universities and Crown Research Institutes are upgrading and linking their supercomputers in a bid to solve some of science's most challenging problems.

The Government, universities and research institutes are jointly funding the upgrade, which they say is essential to the country's economic, environmental and social wellbeing.

Professor Mark Gahegan from Auckland University says increasingly powerful computers are needed to solve complex problems such as modelling earthquakes, and the network allows researchers to pool their resources.

Professor Gahegan says the project will bring New Zealand supercomputing up to international standards.
