About 50 people gathered on a beach in Gisborne to protest against oil exploration off the East Coast.
In chilly conditions, the protesters held hands on the shore and issued a korero.
The demonstration is the latest in a series of protests that began when waterborne activists tried to disrupt the search for oil by Brazilian company Petrobras earlier this year.
