Hundreds march at 'SlutWalk'

4:59 pm on 25 June 2011

Hundreds of people have marched through Wellington and Auckland to protest what they say is a rape culture in New Zealand.

The Wellington walk alone attracted 500 marchers.

The movement, which has been dubbed SlutWalk, started in Canada after a police officer there said women should avoid dressing like sluts if they don't want to be victimised.

The New Zealand organiser, Maria-Jane Scannell, says that attitude is prevalent in this country too and it places the blame on the victim, rather than the rapist.

She says women should be able to dress how they like without having to worry about being attacked.
