Home town fans alone won't get All Blacks through - Kirk

A former All Blacks captain believes home field support will help, but won't necessarily improve the team's fortunes in the Rugby World Cup.

David Kirk is the only New Zealander so far to hoist the William Webb Ellis Trophy having led his side to victory in the inaugural tournament in 1987.

Since then, the All Blacks have only made it to one other final, and four years ago recorded their worst result at the tournament by going out in the quarter-finals.

Kirk says it is big help to players to know the country is right behind them, but he says individual players will have to take responsibility for what they do, and deliver on the day.
