Police say a baby girl hospitalised in Hastings after a fight between her parents is suffering from serious head injuries.

Police were called to the suburb of Flaxmere at 5.15am on Sunday, and have spent the day looking into the cause of the altercation.

The nine-month-old remains in a serious but stable condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital's intensive care unit.

Detective Sergeant Mark Moorhouse says he's unable to disclose whether the injuries are being treated as accidental or non-accidental.

He says the police have completed their scene examination, but still have interviews to conduct with those who may have information.

Mr Moorhouse says the police are getting cooperation from the young girl's parents, who are aged in their late 20s.
