A 29-year-old man from Hastings faces a charge of causing grievous bodily harm to his nine-month-old daughter, and two charges of breaching a protection order.
The girl was admitted to Hawke's Bay Hospital where she is in a serious but stable condition in a high dependency unit.
The man was arrested on Sunday night.
He was due to appear in the Hastings District Court on Monday afternoon, but has agreed to be remanded in custody until an appearance on Tuesday before a judge.
Police were called to the suburb of Flaxmere at 5.15am on Sunday.
