Auckland bars could be temporarily barred from selling alcohol

7:03 pm on 27 June 2011

Six Auckland bars could have their liquor licences suspended following a clampdown.

The police have visited 17 premises over the past two weeks, as part of a joint licensing taskforce with the Auckland Council, district Licensing Agency and Auckland Regional Public Health Service.

All but one was in the central city.

Two bars were found to be unsafe for patrons because of building issues such as blocked fire escapes and overcrowding.

Inspector Andrew Coster says most of the 17 bars targeted have previously lost their licences for a short time.

The applications for suspension are now before the Liquor Licensing Authority.
