Orthopaedic Association calls for better ACC guidelines

The Orthopaedic Association is meeting with the Accident Compensation Cooporation on Tuesday in an attempt to introduce better guidelines and definitions about age and accident-related injuries.

An ACC review in May this year found a lack of confidence about the robustness and fairness of its elective surgery decision-making since cost-cutting changes in 2009.

Orthopaedic Association chief executive Kim Miles says medical professionals and ACC staff need to agree on what are age-related illnesses and what are accident-related if paitents are to get consistent treatment.

Mr Miles says many surgery decisions are based on old clinical data that has been updated within the industry, but not yet by ACC.
