A woman who was critically injured when she was hit by a bus in Wellington on Tuesday afternoon, was the fifth pedestrian to be seriously hurt since the central city's bus route changed.
The police say a woman in her 30s was hit after walking across Willis Street at about 1.10pm. She is in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital.
Traffic was at a standstill in the city centre around Willis Street after the collision but police say it is now back to normal.
It's the latest in a serious of accidents since November last year when the nearby Manners Street was turned into a two-way bus lane.
The part of Willis Street where the accident occurred previously had two lanes going in the same direction, but now has traffic flowing in both directions.
In addition to the five serious injuries, two people have received minor injuries.
The Wellington City Council removed the long-established pedestrian mall and redirected traffic on several adjacent streets in a bid to make public transport more efficient.
A council spokesperson, Richard MacLean, says the council's changes to the bus route mean it will be involved in an investigation by the police and bus company, Go Wellington.
