Woman fifth to be badly hurt after bus route change

5:56 am on 29 June 2011

The Wellington City Council is declining to comment on the latest bus accident in the central city where roads were changed last year to create a bus route.

A woman remains critically injured in Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit following the accident.

The woman aged in her 30s or 40s was hit by a bus on Willis Street about 1.10pm on Tuesday.

She is the fifth person badly hurt by a bus in the area since nearby pedestrian mall was replaced by a bus-only roadway in Manners Street.

The first few accidents led the council to paint signs on the kerb, warning people to look for buses coming from an unexpected direction.

The council is not discussing the latest incident, saying it is a matter for police.
