All Blacks second five-eighth Ma'a Nonu has signed with the Blues for the next two years.
Nonu's agreement with the New Zealand Rugby Union allows him to have a sabbatical at the end of the year.
He will join Japanese side Ricoh Black Rams for a couple of months before returning for next year's Super Rugby season.
In May, the 29-year-old was told by Hurricanes coach Mark Hammet that he would not be offered another contract with the Wellington-based side he had previously played all his rugby for.
Nonu says he is happy to continue his career in New Zealand and was flattered and grateful to receive offers to play for other teams, but the Blues was the best option for him and his family.
